That is those of us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched across decades as rightwing evangelical churches turned the Jesus we grew up with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they turned a figure of compassion into an icon of hostility who approves exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this has happened more gradually, over decades rather than months, yet it remains disturbing via comparable methods, a confusing personal impact for numerous individuals.

The apparent and direct fact that the Savior of the gospels advocates for a type of radical love centered on the poor is what has always made Christian religion something of a controversial faith: engaging for the populace, but owing to its intrinsic extremism needing to be controlled. In the 1950s it was controlled through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Finest Within Us
Hence I have become heartened to observe the determined opposition to Trump arise over the last twelve months.
